When Val works, she focuses upon exploring the possibilities and properties of the pastel medium. Images develop intuitively after lengthy preparation. Collages, sketches and automatist drawings feed her imagination and, whilst working with pastels, allow these to inform her bodily gestures and choice of colours and compositions. Different marks, scuffs, smudges, jabs, sweeps, pentimenti, scribbles along with coloured passages, shapes, voids, lights and darks, and the associations of hues all have a potential role within the final image and their interaction can become meaningful, intriguing, and sometimes beautiful.
