Adrian is fascinated by how shapes rhyme with or conjure up different forms seen in the human body or natural world. Images also suggest to him their own possible logic as he is developing them. This pictorial order becomes independent of the logic of any figuration. The different ways in which the surface is marked, and the different emotional suggestions of such marks, constitute an important part of that pictorial order. Adrian uses the medium of pastel to unite colour and drawing in a direct and sensuous action, allowing a fluidity of process which seems important for the desired character of the final image.
