Ruth's interest in painting followed 3 years training in Design at the Leicester College of Art. She is a long‑standing member of the Leicester Society of Artists and of the Leicester Sketch Club, also of the Pastel Society from 1971 until 1986.

She has exhibited in many national and local exhibitions and galleries, and has had ten one‑person shows. Her work is in both public and private collections. She taught sculpture and painting at Leicester University Sculpture Group for Visually Impaired which later became the Richard Attenborough Centre for Disability and the Arts.
