Michael became interested in painting during the 1950s while taking the Shoe
Design course at the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology. This involved
various Art classes including life drawing, sculpture, history of costume
and commercial art.
Michael was part of a group painting portraits in oils for several years,
and only began using more varied subject matter when he discovered soft
pastel during the 1970s.
Michael likes the effect of pastel on Canson paper, and it combines well
with underpainting and ink in experimental work, using mountboard as a base.
