Norman Sims 1920-2008
It was only after retirement, in 1986, that he began to concentrate more seriously on painting in all media. In 1988 he joined the Crown Hills Art Society and in 1995 founded the Birstall & District Art Society, and in1998, the Leicestershire Pastel Society, both of which are still flourishing. Norman derived great pleasure from drawing and painting out of doors in the belief that it formed a vital part of his progress as an artist, as does painting from the live models at evening classes. Sadly Norman died, 23rd March 2008. This society is Norman's legacy. Norman said: ‘I hope that the setting up of our society has been instrumental in giving our members and those who come to our exhibitions a lot of pleasure and will continue to do so in the future.’ The society owes Norman a great debt for without him there would have not been a Leicestershire Pastel Society.
